Abstract
Fourteen patients with spinal cord cavities were studied with MR imaging. Patients were classified as four groups by the causes or associated conditions. There were 2 patients with communicating syringomyelia(associated with the Chiari 1
malformation)2
patients with post-traumatic syringomyelia, 2 patients with associated tumor, and 8 patients with idiopathic syringomyelia.
The characteristics of each syrinx, the spinal cord, and the appearance of the cerebellar tonsil were analyzed on T1 weighted images and T2 weighted images.
We noted many similarities in the appearances of the syrinx cavities in spite of their causes. MR imaging was the most valuable method of radiographic examination for diagnosis of syringomyelia because it provided an anatomically truthful
visualization
of the sagittal plane of spinal cord, and could directly demonstate the syrinx cavity and associated lesions of spinal cord.
